An
egg and
dart design is a repeated motif of
ovals (
eggs) and straight lines (
darts). Possibly originating in
Minoan architecture, the design was adopted by Ancient
Greek architecture (where it formed an important part of
corinthian order
capitals).

The Romans later appropriated the design, and used it to decorate
entablature and
columns. The design was revived by
neoclassicists in the
middle ages, and used for
decorating the interiors of rooms. The design can also be found more recently on wooden
furniture.
