The place

Luckenbach, Texas is a hamlet (not far from Fredericksburg) named for Albert Luckenbach, husband of the Minna Engel who opened the first store in the area in 1849. They traded with the neighbouring Comanche tribe. A dance hall was later built which made Luckenbach the entertainment center for the local German community.

Rancher Hondo Crouch bought Luckenbach (pop. 3) in 1970. He staged events there which attracted country music artists. Upon his death in 1976 a song was penned in tribute by Chips Moman and Bobby Emmons and performed by Waylon Jennings with Willie Nelson. The song was a hit reaching number 25 on the billboard. This tiny place became a mecca for Country music fans everywhere. Its population of 25 is sometimes inflated to 15,000.

The Song

The only two things in life that make it worth livin'
Is guitars tuned good 'n' firm-feelin' women
I don't need my name in the marquee lights
I got my songs and I got you with me tonight
Maybe it's time we got back to the basics of love

(Chorus) Let's go to Luckenbach, Texas with Waylon and Willie and the boys
This successful life we're livin' got us feudin' like the Hatfields and McCoys
Between Hank Williams' pain songs and Newbury's train songs
And blue eyes cryin' in the rain
Out in Luckenbach, Texas ain't nobody feelin' no pain

So baby let's sell your diamond ring
Buy some boots and faded jeans and go away
This coat and tie is chokin' me
In your high society you cry all day
We've been so busy keepin' up with the Jones
Four-car garage and we're still buildin' on
Maybe it's time we got back to the basics of love
