On the downside, in 1999 the team had the worst ever season in the league's short history, with a 7-25 record, scoring a mere 32 goals while giving up 64 tallies.
Perhaps most notably, German star Lothar Matthaus came to the Metrostars in 2000, raising the profile of the team and of MLS, in general.
