Character Etymology:

A figurative symbol indicating an area above a line. Originally written as something like = but with a shorter top stroke; the verticle line was later added for clarity. Compare with the character for below.

Other notes:

A character with a lot of varied and adopted meanings. I happen to like the reading ue in that, among other things, it can mean eat, drink, or die. How ironically poetic.
