Originally two horizontal lines, the lower one being smaller to indicate below a given line. The verticle lines was added for further emphasis, as it was believed the downward tilt of the third stroke.

- KA, GE: low-class, inferiority, second, or the last volume of a series.
- kuda(ru): come down, go down, descend, be given, be less than, have diarrhea, retire, leave the capitol.
- kuda(saru): give, confer, or oblidge.

- kuda(su): let down, lower, give, confer, issue (orders), have diarrea, or lay (hands) on.
- o(riru): go down.
- o(rosu): take down, wear (for the first time), let off (passengers), excersize, borrow (in subtraction), reduce, remove.
- sa(garu): hang down, dangle.
- sa(geru): hang, wear a decoration.
- shita: lower part, bottom, base, downstaires, below average, withdraw (money), or like the english prefix sub-.
- kuda(ranai): trivial, worthless.
