A company that operates several
local train lines in southwest
Tokyo,
Kawasaki and
Yokohama. They're doing a pretty good business because their lines are heavily used by
commuters between those cities.
However, the interesting thing is that they don't just do transportation, they (or their subsidiaries) offer the full infrastructure suite: around their train lines, they operate supermarkets, department stores, hospitals, recreation facilities, fitness centers and hotels, do construction work and even provide internet and cable TV access.
If you're not used to it, this may seem strange and even a bit orwellian (like Central Services in Terry Gilliam's Brazil), but it makes sense, because those radically different business activities all benefit from each other: a fitness center can attract more customers if it's easily reachable by train, and a train line will have more paying passengers if it leads to places where people want or need to go.
