A section of bone and cartilage located at the base of the sternum. Compression or impact of or to the xiphoid process often results in a breakage. The free-floating sharp chunk of bone then perforates internal structures, causing internal bleeding, resulting in death unless treated. Fracture of the xiphoid process often occurs during CPR, where compression is applied to resuscitate the cardiovascular processes. To avoid this occurence, gently palpate the torso of the victim to find the xiphoid process, and apply compressions approximately 1 1/2 inch above that spot.
