A simple UNIX command that tells you who you currently are logged in as on that local machine.

Looking deeper though is the thoughts that we all wish a computer could tell us who we really are. Why we are here, or what is life. Maybe one day, a god will grant us this wish through a computer program. The next IP protocol, linking all humanity together, creating a single conscious being. lain, the god of the wired-world.

Whilst running whoami can be a enlightening experience, unfortunately most modern unix systems lack the far more useful whereami and whatamidoinghere commands.

These two commands are the ones I always look for just after I've closed all my browser windows, returned to my shell, and tried to work without thinking.
