A useful locution that denotes an idea or phrase that's ill-defined, fuzzy, impenetrable, or meaningless. Common variants include "whatever that means," "whatever that might be," etc.
Example 1: "Intelligence (whatever that is) probably does lead to success in life."
Example 2: "Professor Stanger waxes pedantic about 'the inescapable consequence of ad-hoc relativism on deconstructionist neodeterminism' (whatever that is), but he never quite gets around to explaining what he's talking about."
Warning: if used carelessly or excessively, this turn of phrase will make you sound
pretentious or
ignorant. If you say "whatever
that is," and everyone else knows perfectly well what "that" is, you'll look (to be blunt) like a dum-dum.
