ve-roo'-ka, plural is verrucae

A wart or wart-like projection usually caused by a viral infection.

I first saw this word used in Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, one of the kids who gets to go into Willy Wonka's factory is named Veruca Salt (although verruca is the correct spelling.)

"My dear Veruca! How do you do? ... You do have an interesting name, don't you? I always thought that a veruca [sic] was a sort of a wart that you got on the sole of your foot!..."

More recently, I heard this word used on Red Dwarf, season six, "Legion".

Apparently, it's used in Britian a lot more than in the U. S.

Ver*ru"ca (?), n.; pl. Verrucæ (#). [L. Cf. Verrugas.]
