An audio effect that allows a sound to be shortened or lengthened without altering its pitch. It is pretty much the opposite of pitch shifting. Imagine turning a 'tone' knob on a piece of audio equipment without the sound becoming higher or lower. A program like FruityLoops has time stretching utilities, is also a feature on many samplers.

A good example of this is Let's Take The Fresh Step Together, the first song on the Trans Am album Red Line. The song itself is simply a portion of The Microsoft Sound, which has been stretched to over fifty seconds long.
