Actually, long before they were popular in 1980's pop culture, thin ties - and skinny lapels on one's suit or sportcoat - were popular among some early 1960's urban hipsters. Of course, after the paradigm shift of LSD and the hippies, those wardrobe items somehow ended up in thrift stores.
