Peace Society, The, an organization founded in 1816; has for its object the promotion of permanent and universal peace. It welcomes the support of Christians of all denominations, also of those persons who oppose war on humanitarian or other grounds. The society has always advocated a gradual, proportionate, and simultaneous disarmament by all the nations of Europe, and the principle of arbitration, and claims as partly due to its efforts that this mode of settling international difficulties has been frequently adopted.
