The Digest is the authority on Roman law. It was written in Latin. It drew from 2000 books, and was basically a compilation of Roman legal opinions and statutes. It claimed to hold no contradictions; however, due to the large number of compilers this claim is false. It became very fashionable to study The Digest in the 11th Century

The Digest, also known as the Codex, was but one part of the four part Corpus Juris Civilus, also known as the Justinian Code. It was commisioned by Justinian and compiled by a fellow named Tribonian. The Digest, along with the rest of the Justinian Code forms the basis of most modern european judicial systems.
