Some uses for Tantalum:

Tantalum wire is used as a filament for evaporating aluminum.

Tantalum's extremely high melting point and hardness make it favorable for high-grade steels used in missiles and aircraft.

Tantalum is extremely resistant to corrosion and chemical reactions below 150 degrees C, and is used in medical applications such as bone repair and reinforcement.

Tan"ta*lum (?), n. [NL. So named on account of the perplexity and difficulty encounterd by its discoverer (Ekeberg) in isolating it. See Tantalus.] Chem.

A rare nonmetallic element found in certain minerals, as tantalite, samarskite, and fergusonite, and isolated as a dark powder which becomes steel-gray by burnishing. Symbol Ta. Atomic weight 182.0. Formerly called also tantalium.
