Table chess is another game played by people 'in the know'. During a posh dinner party or otherwise, you sit opposite your partner.
At random intervals in the meal, you casually move an item on the table to another place. This can be as mundane as sliding the salt along or bizarre as turning your partner's wine glass upside down.
You take it in turns, and add comments such as, 'No stacking please' or 'Nope, I touched that 2 goes ago'. Not too loudly so as to make it obvious, but just loud enough that other people who are listening might be able to hear.
Of course there are no rules, but the small glow of satisfaction is gained by confusing those to the left and right of you, and keeping you both amused (for a short amount of time) while everyone else is still bored.
