Golfing term which means that you must not only take a stroke for your misdeed, but you must also go back to from whence you played that stroke and play again from that spot. This is one of the harshest penalties in golf, and it is usually assessed when you have hit your ball out of bounds.

For instance, if you hit a 300-yard drive and the ball is out of bounds, perhaps only by one inch, you have to add a stroke to your score and rehit from the tee. If you could drop a ball where it went out of bounds, you could still make par with a great second shot (if it were a par 4) and make the putt. But you can't do that. The only way you could still par the hole would be to hit a great drive and then hole out your next shot. Damn near impossible.
