OK, I admit it, I thought this was just a rude little nodeshell until I happened across Noli-me-tangere which to my astonishment mentioned the "squirting cucumber" and led me on to cucumber where I discovered that it is "a plant (Ecbalium Elaterium) whose small oval fruit separates from the footstalk when ripe and expels its seeds and juice with considerable force through the opening thus made. See Elaterium." - © Webster 1913.
