Social power inheres in social roles or groups because of cultural understandings of the structure of the world we live in or of the specific situation. It can be observed in its effects: structural racism, patriarchy, and patterns of poverty and abuse. Social power is the way things are assumed to be by those who have acculturated successfully to their surroundings.
