A literal translation from ancient Icelandic would yield the phrase "the amniotic sac of a calf" but now is used in modern Icelandic to denote a video monitor. Follow me here: back in the day (a few hundred years or so), these gory membranes were dried and stretched across holes in the earthen walls of their sod houses for windows. Even though today, where glass has long since replaced the membrane as the transparent barrier in windows, the word "skjar" still evokes the idea of a window, which isn't a far leap to a computer monitor.

Users of other languages have been comparing Microsoft Windows to other bloody viscerae for quite some time, but that's a whole other story.
