A side piece (or, more crudely, side
chick or side
bitch) is modern colloquial slang for a
mistress (though a man can be called a side piece too, though rarely in practice). The construction is obvious -- side, as in on the side, and piece, as in a piece of meat, an object lacking agency beyond its most carnal of uses.
There is an old
joke: a woman's
boyfriend came to
visit, and then went on his way. The woman, enamored of this man despite knowing of his roaming eye, prayed, "
Lord, please make all his side pieces disappear" -- and, POOF!! she was gone.
More oddly seen is the instance of the woman proud to be deemed (or perhaps declare herself) the side piece,
but some do seem to be, especially in the lyrics of rap songs. And from the other perspective, up-and-coming
rap star
Jack Harlow (probably most recognizable as that other prisoner who breaks out of the slammer with
Lil Nas X in the
music video for the song, "
Industry Baby"), has a song titled "Side Piece," which starts off, "I already got a song for my main chick / So let me do a record for my side piece."
