A self-conferred title is one which someone gives themself. Usually this person is a crackpot trying to get some small measure of credibility or respect, but sometimes it's also for humorous or ironic reasons. The usual self-conferred title is 'Doctor' -- as in "Dr. Seuss" or "Dr. Mom".
