A return envelope with the sender's address and adequate postage placed on it, to be enclosed inside mail sent. Often abbreviated SASE. An SASE can be used for a variety of purposes when you need a response; for example: when requesting genealogy records, when requesting a free sample of flaxseed, when submitting a manuscript to an editor and you want a reply; in general, an SASE is used when one sends someone something and wants it returned, or is requesting that other materials be sent back.

When you need an SASE for international post, an International Reply Coupon must be used, as US stamps are as good in France as Mongolian stamps are in Guatemala (see: worthless). This coupon can be purchased at the post office, and serves as payment for the international postage required.
