Scratching is form of musical expression done by DJs on a turntable. It involves moving a vinyl record back and forth underneath the stylus of a turntable and creates a unique sound, a combination of a clip of whatever is on the record being scratched with, and the sound of a needle being run over vinyl. Scratching has made (some) people recognize turntables as an instrument. Scratching can generally be found in various forms of modern music, such as hiphop and acid jazz.
