Dogs bred more to find and track game than chase it down specifically. beagles are the most commonly used scenthounds, although beagles, bassets, and some of the terrier family such as fox terriers are used as well. These dogs are bred for a keen sense of smell and hearing above anything else. They are usually small, have relatively short legs, a stockier build, and frequently large ears. This build lets them manuver well through wooded areas and track game in its own enviornment, in a context where speed is not terribly important.
