Radio call signs, often (incorrectly) called the phonetic alphabet, are used in vocal communications over radio connections and are partially based on the Greek alphabet. Each letter is replaced by a word, so that even if there is interference or a noisy line, individual letters can be discerned by the user. However, they are starting to go out of fashion in the e-age of instantaneous telegraphy.

The radio call sign alphabet is as follows:
a alpha
b bravo
c charlie
d delta
e echo
f foxtrot
g golf
h hotel
i india
j juliet
k kilo
l lima
m mike
n november
o oscar
p papa
q quebec
r romeo
s sierra
t tango
u uniform
v victor
w whisky
x x-ray
y yankie
z zulu
