"What are
you carrying
under your
toga?"
This
phrase made
people in my
Latin class crack up when they
saw it in the
textbook. The phrase occured in a story titled "
A Young Roman Hero", about a boy carrying a
secret message for the
emperor who was
mugged and
killed by a group of young
street toughs. Before the
mugging he was
accosted by a
lady who asked him, "
Where are you going, little boy?
Would you like to come to my house?
I have no children of my own." The lady's
speech also caused a good deal of
laughter.
The
teacher says she
had a
student who
never got
over it.
