If you would let me dress you for the occasion

I would place you in a white ribbed turtleneck,
under unbuttoned flannel shirt
Over a pair of faded jeans
(The kind that have pale half moons below the back pockets, And a hole in one knee)
You could wear sneakers
Or half boots
And I would tie your hair up with a red kerchief
But not well

See, this way you wouldn’t look out of place in the pumpkin patch
And a scarecrow would have his dreams come true
