Safe room or passageway, found in British houses of the late Tudor into the Jacobean period, and some Victorian and later recreations of same. Originally devised to 'hide the priest' if ^H^H when the laws came to enforce the household's allegiance to the Church of England, King and Country, under God! Found as a safety measure against Native uprisings in the New World as in the Henry Whitfield House of 1637, in Guilford, Ct. Also various narrow, or otherwise unusable passageways in modern homes.
