The posterior ends of the labia minora and the labia majora join creating a raised ridge of mucosal skin, this is the frenulum of the labia or posterior fourchette. It is located at the opposite end of the labia from the clitoris
The posterior fourchette may be injured in cases of sexual abuse and documentation of its integrity is part of an abuse screening exam.
Toluidine blue is a dye used during forensic exams of the posterior fourchette to highlight (and make more visable) minor trauma.
It is important to note that not all, not even most, cases of sexual abuse or rape result in any genital trauma. In those cases where trauma does occur the hymen (in a child or virgin) and the posterior fourchette (in adult or child) are the most common sites.
