For those who are really interested in old highways, you can check out this. Located in the Algodones Dunes, 42 miles east of El Centro in California are the reminants of a wooden plank road. The road was built in 1914 as part of the origina US Highway 80. Today, a 100-foot long section is preserved in a fenced area and is a state historical landmark. The plank road is a one lane road with 2 wooden sides for the wheels, and at marked distances turnouts. As you might guess, the road was often buried in the shifting sands.
