From pico-RNA. Any member of several species of virus that has a small, single, positive stranded RNA genome, and a naked icosahedral protein coat (no membrane envelope). The positive stranded nature of the genome means that its uncoated nucleic acid itself is infectious, and can act as its own mRNA. Notable examples of family Picornaviridae are poliovirus and rhinovirus (which causes the common cold).
