A pepper mill is a type of hand-operated burr mill designed to freshly grind peppercorns at the point when pepper is needed, either in a recipe or for use before eating. There are two revolving gearlike metal burrs designed to grind away at the pepper. The distance is usually adjustable by the user for a coarse or fine ground spice.

Burr-type grinders produce a uniform sized particle and do not heat the peppercorns as much as electric versions. Unlike coffee grinders, most pepper mills do not have a large crank to turn because they're designed to be used directly over plates and pots. The whole top portion rotates the burrs with one hand while the shaft or lower portion is held stationary by the other hand.
