A game invented in Argentina, played by two team of four men on horseback. The teams try to throw the pato (a leather ball with six handles) into the opposing team's basket.
The game, formalized in the late 1930s, evolved from an old (and violent) gaucho game, subsequently forbidden in 1882 by the government. In the original version, the ball was a live duck sewn in a leather pouch. The world pato means "duck" in Spanish.
