An optical printer is a machine that incorporates a projector and a motion picture camera. Film makers use optical printers to combine live action with animation, and also to make fades, dissolves, iris outs and wipes. Optical printers can also be used in situations where the director made a shot that was too far away. The optical printer can be used to create a closer shot by cutting out the surrounding area and focusing on a smaller area.
