A nurse crop is a hardy, fast-growing plant species which protects or promotes the growth of associated plants. Such a plant often aids other plants by reducing weed growth, preventing soil erosion, and/or providing shade for the other plants.
For instance, rye is sometimes planted to help protect wildflower seedlings. Oats, barley, and wheat are often planted as nurse crops for other plants intended as forage for cattle.
