A japanese go term. It is equivalent to flipping a coin to decide who goes first. One person grabs a handful of stones, and the other guesses odd or even. They show their choice by putting either 1 or 2 stones on the board. Then the stones are counted 2 at a time, and if the guess was correct, that person takes the black stones and goes first.

A conjugation of nigiru, a japanese verbs which means to grip, or to grasp. If you put the kanji for "hand" after it, it forms the word for handshake "akushu". Here is the kanji root of "nigiri".

This is one kanji, but is formed of two radicals:
The left side, which is a vertical line with two horizontal slashes through it, is the radical meaning hand.
When alone, the right side means something like "room".

Sushi consisting of a small* block of steamed rice, topped with a slice of raw fish. There may be a small dollop of wasabi between the rice and the fish, and there may be a strip+ of seaweed wrapped around the narrow axis for stability.

A piece of nigiri should be eaten in a single bite if possible, although sufficiently dextrous eaters can bite nigiri in twain without causing a mess. Nigiri may be dipped into a mixture of soy sauce and wasabi for additional seasoning.

* Usually about 1" x 1" x 2"
+ About 1 cm wide
