Proteins that bind enzymes for the sole purpose of controlling the enzyme's are also called modulator proteins. cyclic AMP dependent protein kinase is an example of a protein dimer that contains a catalytic domain which carries out the function and a regulatory domain. The catalytic domain can only function if the regulatory domain dissociates.

Other ways that proteins regulate activity:
allostery
zymogen
isozyme
