The Meters are in fact New Orleans funk at its finest. Furthermore they were comprised of

Art Neville (keyboards and vocals)
Leo Nocentelli (guitar)
Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste (drums)
George Porter (bass)

Occasionally the Meters were joined by Art's brothers Aaron and Charles Neville as vocalists.

Top 40 R&B hits from the Meters include:

Sophisticated Cissy 1969
Cissy Strut 1969
Look-K a Py Py 1970
Chicken Strut 1970

The only Top 40 mainstream hit I can find from them is Hey Pocky A-Way which made the top 40 in 1974. That led to the Meters opening for the Rolling Stones on the Stones 1975-1976 tour.

The Meters were also the studio band for several labels, and you can hear their work on albums from Paul McCartney, Robert Plant, Dr. John, and Earl King.
