Matador Records is now a 100% independent label. Established in 1989, Matador was (and still is) a force to be reckoned with in the loosely named "
indie rock"
genre.
Matador sold 49% of their company to Capitol Records in the mid 90's, in an effort to give their artists more exposure and to gain publicity.
In the late 90's, however, both companies decided that the deal was not working out, so Matador bought back their 49%, and retained all their artists except Liz Phair, who moved to Capitol.
