There are several legends
involving machine translation
. Typically a phrase is translate
d from English
to some other language
, and back to English,
and hilarity ensues
For example, take the phrase "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak". Legend has it that if you let a machine translate this to Russian then translate that result back to English, you'll get: "The vodka is good, but the meat is rotten"
Another example: "Out of sight, out of mind" to Russian and back again via MT supposedly yields: "Blind idiot".
