Kyogen ('mad words' in Japanese) are the comedy plays, performed as interludes between the main Noh plays in Noh Theatre. They are held, generally, in less esteem than the Noh itself, and are of less moment and gravity too.

The Kyogen, on the whole, serve to mock the grander Noh plays, and to serve as light refreshment between them.

The Kyogen I have seen may have lost a good deal in the translation, but really were not all that rib-tickling.
