The
samurai practice of following one's
master into
death by committing
seppuku. This custom was outlawed by the
Tokugawa Shogunate in the late 1600's.
A samurai considered himself to be already dead as soon as he became a retainer. As such, when his master died a samurai had no reason to continue living.
