Issey Miyake was born in 1935 in Hiroshima, Japan. He studied art in Tokyo and then spent five years in Paris and New York working for fashion designers Guy Laroche and Givenchy.
Miyake makes his own fabrics, and experiments a lot with structure and form. As well as wearable functional clothes, he also makes costume pieces that look more like sculpture than clothing.
