insula

The insula (also called the central lobe or Island of Reil) is located within the cerebral cortex and is surrounded by the temporal lobe, frontal lobe and the parietal lobe. The insula is associated with deep visceral bodily funtions.

In Roman architecture a multistory apartment house. Usualy concrete (the Romans used it for everything) faced with brick. This can also be an entire Roman city block. These buildings housed stores on the ground level, because of this the best apartments are found on the top level that is removed from the noisy streets and markets of the time. This is very similar to modern day apartments, but with no elevator to make the flight up easier.
