Theory put forward by the zoologist and naturalist Jean Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet, Chevalier de Lamarck, in which parents pass along to their children traits that they acquire during their lifetimes. For example, girrafes need to stretch their necks to reach leaves high up on the trees. If a girrafe stretches its neck, its neck will lengthen, and it will thus have children with long necks too.
