In Search Of was a television program dedicated to the eternal questions of the 1970s -- which particular aliens built the pyramids, what tour group can best take you to see the Holy Grail, and whether or not Bigfoot stole your leisure suit.

Or, as host Leonard Nimoy put it at the start of every episode, they were dedicated to "Lost Civilizations, Strange Phenomena, Missing Persons, Magic and Witchcraft, Myths and Monsters, and Extraterrestrials."

Much of the subject matter was total nonsense, and the producers' credulous approach would make somebody like James Randi explode in anger. However, it was well written, the cinematography and music were great, and Nimoy was perfect as host.

These combined to create an atmosphere of mystery and danger. Seen objectively, the content of the show was almost 100% bunk, disguised with grainy reinactments of sasquatch sightings or UFO landings, and interviews of toothless locals. One friend of mine saw re-runs recently on cable TV and reports that, to his jaded grown-up eyes, Nimoy's late-1970s haircut and moustache were the most terrifying thing on the screen.

A few episodes covered non-supernatural topics such as the life of Vincent Van Gogh. These have aged more gracefully than the others.

The show ran from 1976 until 1982 on NBC and can be seen periodically on various cable channels in re-runs. It has an active fan base.
