A fairly common phrase used in the US.
The word nickel can also be interchanged with penny, dime, quarter, and even dollar (though any amount can be used, it's not common practice).
ie: "If I had a dollar... for everytime I heard that I'd be a millionare"
People often use this line when referring to something they have heard many many times.
