The helmeted honeyeater Meliphaga cassidix is one of the rarest birds in the world. It is only found in Southern Victoria, east of Port Phillip. This is the only bird species restricted to the state, although it belongs to the larger group of over 80 species of honeyeater. The honeyeater has a yellow crest or helmet, and a yellow tuft behind each ear with a distinctive black face. The helmeted honeyeater is the bird emblem of Victoria.
