Homemade Barbecue Sauce Recipe
This sauce is very versatile. It works well as a pour on sauce or marinade for meats before grilling. My favorite way to use it is in recipes that require further cooking such as barbecue chicken wings, pulled pork or chicken or as a meatloaf sauce instead of the usual tomato sauce.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 teaspoon olive oil
- 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup finely chopped onions
- 2 cups ketchup
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup dill pickle juice (or apple cider vinegar if you are not a huge pickle fan)
- 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons yellow mustard
- 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup chopped dill pickles (optional)
- onion powder
- garlic powder
- cayenne pepper
- worchestershire sauce
Preparation:
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet on medium heat. Add onion and saute until clear. Turn the heat down to medium low and add the ketchup, water, juice or vinegar, brown sugar and mustard. Cook and stir until ingredients are incorporated. Add the pickles, if using, and the rest of the ingredients to taste. Heat through and simmer until desired thickness is acheived (skip this step is you are using a recipe that requires further cooking).Let sauce cool and trasfer to an airtight container. Store in refrigerator for four to six weeks.
